One year after the pandemic had started, Laos had only the accumulated number of infected patients of 49 cases.
However after the past Pi Mai or Songkran (Laos New Year Festival) in April 2021, there has been an emerging of new cases within the communities. The Lao Government estimated that the number may go up to 2,000 cases, and have begun to set up field hospitals.
We think to ourselves, “This situation is going to be very tough for the medical professionals!” So we, the Alumni of Fa Ngum High School ( ‘83-84) started gathering funds to buy food supplies for healthworkers in the frontline.
Mrs. Souphavady MASUHARA said that at the beginning she didn’t have a way to distribute them until seeing projects by the FFF Pak Chong, Thailand team. With the help of my friends, Narongrit Sukchaiprakarn (Chong) from Eden Organic Farm in Pak Chong and the “Food for Fighters Project Founder, Panchana Vatanasathien (Tete) from “PenLaos” Restaurant, we immediately began our project.
“I was very lucky that my daughter (Mayu) got involved with setting everything up, and we were able to launch the FFF LAOS project overnight. Our aim is to gather the kindness of people in our society, our friends and family to get involved in this charitable cause, in order to help with food support to our medical professionals; doctors, nurses, and paramedics. Not only does this project help support the people in the frontline of this pandemic, but also enables local small restaurants to be able to keep running during these difficult times. This pandemic affects all of us, it’s an on-going war. But we need to stay strong and support each other.”
Furthermore, Ms. Panchana Vatanasathien, Food For Fighters project founder from Thailand, expressed that “I’m glad that Pi Iang (Mrs. Souphavady) quickly started the FFF Laos Project and put a lot of effort into it. We must react quickly to this outbreak. FFF Thailand gives its full support to the FFF Laos team whether in terms of financial support to purchase Pinto (lunch boxes), other necessities for the food delivery. We also share our experience in setting up the project to support both the work of health workers in the frontline and the network of restaurants when food delivery service in Vientiane may not be possible due to the outbreak.”
