Shanwei’s ’salty tea’ builds stronger ties between people

Tea is one of the most iconic representatives of Asian culture though different regions have their own brewing techniques and types of tea.

“Salty tea” is a unique drink from Shanwei in Southern China. The drink usually includes tea leaves, peanuts, sesame, fried rice and salt.

According to Rin Fung, the owner of “Really Yummy,” “Lei” means “to grind” in Chinese which is how the name “lei cha” or “ground tea” came to be.

People in Shanwei gave “lei cha” a personal twist by adding salt into the ingredients; thus, the “salty tea” was born.

Rin Fung

According to Fung, it’s part of the Shanwei people’s tradition to serve salty tea to guests.

“We enjoy serving salty tea as it helps build stronger ties between people,” she explained.
